The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely voters in Rhode Island shows that independent candidate Lincoln Chafee holds a slight lead over Democratic State Treasurer Frank Caprio in Rhode Island's race for governor.
It's the first poll since Rhode Island Attorney General Patrick Lynch dropped out of the race for the Democratic nomination last week.
The Rasmussen Report finds Chafee with 37 percent to Caprio's 30 percent if John Robitaille is their GOP opponent. Robitaille, a former top aide to current Governor Carcieri, gets 23 percent of the vote.
Two percent would vote for "some other candidate" and eight percent are undecided.
If former State Representative Victor Moffitt is the Republican gubernatorial candidate, Chafee gets 36 percent of the vote, while Caprio gets 33 percent. Moffitt nets 18 percent of the vote.
In that match-up, 4 percent prefer another option and 9 percent are undecided.
Rasmussen said, "Generally speaking, these numbers are little changed from late May and suggest a very competitive election may be in store," Rasmusssen said.
Chafee's campaign released the following statement: "We are pleased that
Senator Chafee continues to poll so strongly in this crowded field, and
we believe this reflects a solid base of support that Senator Chafee
has earned through years of service to Rhode Island. At the same time,
this race is far from over and Senator Chafee is redoubling his efforts
on the campaign trail....meeting as many Rhode Islanders as humanly
possible to hear their concerns about the present and their suggestions
for a better Rhode Island in the future."
Caprio's campaign said in a statement, "Frank's efforts organizing to
earn support is paying off, as his very favorable rating has grown by 6
percent since the last Rasmussen survey and his unfavorable rating
remains a fraction of Senator Chafee's (24 percent for Chafee and only 8
percent for Caprio). Voters remain undecided, and as more learn about
Mr. Chafee's plan to raise taxes and Frank's plan to cut wasteful
spending we are confident in earning their support."
Rasmussen said its statewide telephone survey of 500 likely voters in
Rhode Island was conducted on July 21 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin
of sampling error is plus or minus 4.5 percentage points with a 95
percent level of confidence.

Linc Chafee is a tested leader of unquestioned integrity and a strong independent voice. As Governor, he will work hard to create new jobs, rebuild our economy, solve our chronic budget problems, end corruption, and forge a new way forward for Rhode Island.
